Carey was 5'10 inches tall when she became a leading model. Her popularity among American designer Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren was extremely high. Her father is an accomplished geologist who was voted Scientist of the Year back in 1979 by the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists. Carey went to all over the world due to her father's work. She started modeling part time while she was at college at University of Colorado and caught the attention of an agent of the Ford model Agency in New York. She moved to France in 1980. She stayed briefly in Paris and Bordeaux before returning to New York to continue with her education at college and build a modeling career. She soon began appearing on the covers of Vogue, Glamour, etc. In addition to modeling, she studied at New York University full-time to earn a master's degree in literature. Gradually she became interested in acting, and began studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. The year 1986 was the year she had her first acting role which was a part of Club Paradise, with Robin Williams. She enjoys skiing, wind surfing as well as rock climbing, and white water river rafting.
